Panasonic unveils 20-inch 4K tablet Panasonic has shown a 20-inch tablet with a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels at the CES gadget fair. The device runs on Windows 8 and is therefore considerably larger than the average tablet. Besides the size and resolution, few specifications have been announced.

Winners of VAF call for ultra-short animation projects announced The Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF) has given the green light to 12 projects from the open call for 1-minute animated films on the theme of 'peace'. The winners of this competition will be awarded a maximum amount of €30,000 each.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck receive lifetime achievement awards Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck are honored during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The 38-year-old DiCaprio will receive the American Riviera Award on February 1. Affleck, who is two years older, will receive the Modern Master Award on January 25.

21st prize for Land of the Heroes in Turkey Sahim Omar Kalifa's short film Land of the Heroes has won the Best Short Film Award at the Yilmaz GÃ¼ney Film Festival (19 - 23 December) in Batman, Turkey. The Kurdish-Flemish director personally accepted the award, which carries a cash prize of €3,000.

Voting for Oscars takes longer due to login problems The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' online voting system continues to cause problems. The organization has given members an extra day to cast their votes for the Oscar nominations. The Academy fears that the problems will lead to a low number of votes.

Flemish reviewers prefer Amour to Elena and Jagten The film "Amour" by Austrian director Michael Haneke has been voted the best film of 2012 by fourteen Flemish film critics. Fourth and fifth are the Romanian "Beyond the hills" by Christian Mungiu and the Turkish print "Once upon a time in Anatolia".

Oscar winner Mike Hopkins drowned Two-time Oscar winner Mike Hopkins drowned while rafting in a river in New Zealand on Sunday. Hopkins won the Oscar for best sound editing in 2003 in the films Lord of the Rings: the two Towers by his compatriot Peter Jackson. The New Zealander is 53 years old.
