British-American actress and Oscar winner Joan Fontaine died yesterday at the age of 96 in her hometown of Carmel, California. Fontaine became famous with the film Rebecca, the first film that the legendary Alfred Hitchcock made in the United States. For her role in Suspicion, which, like Rebecca, was directed by Hitchcock, she received the Oscar for best actress in 1942. She was the only actress to receive an Oscar for a role in Hitchcock's many films.
