Veerle Baetens has received the European Film Prize for Best Actress for her role in The Broken Circle Breakdown. She received the award on Saturday evening during the European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin.
The opponents in the category were no less: Keira Knightley (Anna Karenina), Naomi Watts (The Impossible), Luminita Gheorghiu (Child's Pose) and Barbara Sukowa (Hannah Arendt). Veerle Baetens thanked director Felix van Groeningen for choosing her for the role of Elise. Johan Heldenbergh, who plays her partner in the film, was nominated in the Best Actor category, but that award went to the Italian Toni Servillo (La Grande Bellezza).
