The Kinograph is an open source device that allows you to create a semi-professional digitization studio for a few thousand euros. Student Matthew Epler accidentally came across a large load of old films in Jordan, shot on 35mm film. “I had the feeling that it contained valuable material, but in Jordan there was virtually no interest in doing anything with it, let alone investing in it,” he says in his thesis presentation. Using cardboard and simple lights, he managed to get a number of screenshots from the film. They turned out to be statues of the old king of Jordan.
