German actor Horst Tappert, known from the police series Derrick, who died in 2008, was a member of the feared Waffen-SS during the Second World War. The Frankfurter Allgemeine announced this on Friday. The actor himself stated in his memoirs that he was part of the Wehrmacht as a medic. However, from 1943 Tappert was a member of the SS Division Totenkopf, which was active on the Eastern Front at that time. The Waffen-SS was the armed elite division of the Schutzstaffel, which was active on various fronts alongside the regular German army. Heinrich Himmler was in charge of the SS.
