Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-Duk has won the Golden Lion for best film in Venice for his drama Pieta. The American drama The Master also won two awards. Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman received the Silver Lion for best director on behalf of Paul Thomas Anderson and took home the statuette for best actor for fellow actor Joaquin Phoenix. The special jury prize went to Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl for his Paradies: Glaube.
