A European citizens' initiative for free and pluralistic media will start in September. According to the initiators, including the Democracy and Media Foundation, Alliance Internationale des Journalistes and human rights organizations, the European Union must make more efforts to strengthen media pluralism in Europe. At least 1 million signatures must be collected from at least seven Member States. They then hope that the European Commission will come up with a legislative proposal to harmonize the rules surrounding media concentration, prevent conflicts of interest and guarantee transparency and pluralism.
