German director Kurt Maetzig died on Wednesday at the age of 101. His widow said this. Maetzig was one of the most important directors in the former communist GDR. He made his name with films such as Ehe im Schatten (1947), a very successful film that attracted more than 12 million viewers to the cinemas. His film Das Kaninchen bin ich (1965) was banned by the authorities in the GDR because it was too critical of the social problems in the communist state.
