American writer Gore Vidal died yesterday at the age of 86. In addition to novels, plays and essays, Vidal also wrote several film scripts, including for Caligula (1979) and Billy the Kid (1989). He also contributed to the screenplay for Ben Hur (1959), although he was not mentioned in the film's credits. Vidal also published dozens of essays, novels and plays in which he took a critical approach to American culture and politics. Vidal was also a political activist.
