French filmmaker Chris Marker, known for the films La Jetée and Sans Soleil, has died. Marker, who was an inspiration for Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys with La Jetée, is 91 years old.
Marker was seen as one of the most secretive and mysterious filmmakers. He owes this reputation not only to his films - the title of his highly regarded essayistic film Fond de L'air est Rouge is virtually untranslatable in meaning - but also to his media shyness. There are almost no photos of him.
