The Oscars are primarily about a lot of money, and guess what? Oscar winners are - contrary to what everyone suspects - often not very big blockbusters. The most important reason to promote the nominees extra is that when a film is nominated and then goes home with an Oscar, the audience is immediately excited to watch the film. It is a myth that the Academy likes to award films that do well in cinemas. The best-selling films of the year have been nominated for an Academy Award just six times in the past twenty years. Four of them actually went home with a statue.
