American actor Biagio 'Ben' Gazzara has died in a hospital in New York at the age of 81. There he underwent treatment for pancreatic cancer. Gazzara made his theater debut in 1955 in the Broadway classic 'Cat on a Hot Zinc Roof'. He achieved success on the silver screen as early as 1959 in 'The Anatomy of a Murder' by Otto Preminger. In 1969 he played the lead role in 'The Bridge at Remagen'. The actor intertwined theatre, television and film (in which he appeared about thirty times).
