On November 26, the Makandra Film Festival opened in Paramaribo, Suriname. The festival, celebrating 50 years of independence, kicked off a week of documentary premieres by 11 Surinamese filmmakers. The Film Fund spoke with documentary filmmaker Kevin Headley and filmmaker, news reporter, and presenter Samuel Blankendal, one of the other selected filmmakers, about their films, their journey, and their hopes for the next generation of Surinamese filmmakers.
