At the 2025 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), newcomers like Akinola Davies Jr. with "My Father's Shadow" and Harry Lighton with "Pillion" dominate. However, there is dissatisfaction with the gender-neutral acting categories, where women have only received two of the twelve nominations. BIFA directors Deena Wallace and Amy Gustin argue that this is an exception, pointing to a predominantly female victory in previous years. They emphasize that the nominations reflect the industry and not the voting process, in which 58% of the voters are women.
