Adapting books into films is sometimes seen as lazy, but it turns out to be lucrative; book adaptations earn on average 50% more than films based on original scripts. In the Netherlands, approximately five books are adapted into films each year. Internationally, there is also a lot of attention for book adaptations, as is evident from the collaboration between the Berlinale and the Frankfurt Book Fair. Director Martin Koolhoven and others emphasize that a film can never be an exact copy of a book, which makes the process complex and challenging. Adapting books into films requires a creative approach to convey the essence and soul of the book.
