Michael Nyman, born in London in 1944, receives the WSA Lifetime Achievement Award at the Film Fest Gent. Nyman, originally a music critic and musicologist, introduced the term 'minimalist music' in 1968. He developed into an influential composer in orchestras, opera and film music. His collaborations with Peter Greenaway, such as in "The Draughtsman's Contract", and his groundbreaking score for "The Piano" by Jane Campion, in which he used minimalist piano music, are highlights of his career. Nyman combines baroque and contemporary elements, which distinguishes him within minimalism.
