David Lynch, the iconic American director known for Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive, has died at the age of 78. Lynch, who combined a successful career in mainstream cinema with an exploration of the bizarre and experimental, was praised for his unique contribution to film. He received three Oscar nominations for Best Director and won the Palme d'Or in 1990 for Wild at Heart. Lynch, who was also active in painting, music and meditation, had recently gone public with his battle with emphysema.
