Sandra Beerends’ film “Neshoma” tells the story of the Jewish community in Amsterdam between the two world wars. The film follows Rusha, a fictional character from a working-class family, whose life is revealed through archive footage and letters to her brother Max in Indonesia. “Neshoma” offers a mix of joy and tragedy, showing family and social life in Amsterdam against the backdrop of world events, culminating in the deportation of Jews in 1942. Beerends, who is of Indonesian descent, connects this story to her earlier work “They Call Me Babu” and emphasizes the universal themes of war trauma and captivity. The film will premiere at the Tuschinski theater during IDFA 2024.
