Martijn Blekendaal, known for his award-winning documentary The Man Who Looked Beyond the Horizon, discusses his new film The Invisible Ones, selected for the IDFA Competition for Youth Documentary. In this film, Blekendaal creates a superhero for children who must remain invisible to survive. He chooses to have adults, including World War II survivors and a refugee from Gaza, tell their stories of resilience instead of children. Blekendaal, who was adopted and raised in a white environment himself, wants to show empathy and understanding for children who have to be invisible. He uses playful editing and a narrator to make the film accessible to young viewers, without them having to read subtitles.
