In an interview with SEE NL, Dutch director Luuk Bouwman discusses his new documentary "The Propagandist", which is competing in the International Competition of IDFA. The film tells the story of Dutch filmmaker Jan Teunissen (1898-1975), who was known as the "czar" of the Dutch film industry during the Nazi era and had personal ties to Goebbels. Despite his collaboration with the Third Reich and his involvement in the production of anti-Semitic films, such as "Reynard The Fox", Teunissen and his colleagues largely escaped the expected retribution after the war. Bouwman, who previously made the documentary "All Against All" about fascism in the Netherlands, uses a seven-hour interview with Teunissen as the basis for "The Propagandist". The film examines Teunissen's career and the dubious role he played in Dutch film history, without wanting to reassess his contribution because of his unsavory reputation.
