Filmnieuws
Mathijs Poppe makes his debut at IDFA 2024 with "The Jacket", a film that explores the life of Jamal Hindawi, a Palestinian political theatre maker in the Lebanese refugee camp Shatila. The film, which balances between documentary and fiction, examines themes such as Palestinian identity, exile and the search for connection. Poppe, who studied film at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent, was inspired by his time as a volunteer in Shatila. "The Jacket" follows Hindawi's search for a symbolic jacket, which embodies the Palestinian question and the fragility of existence in Shatila. Poppe emphasizes the importance of fiction as a means for Hindawi to process his reality and explores the impact of exile and identity on an individual and collective level.
