The 37th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the world’s largest documentary film festival, opens on November 14, 2024 with Piotr Winiewicz’s “About a Hero.” This year, the festival features 250 documentary titles, including 12 titles in the International Competition that transcend personal histories to offer reflections on our contemporary world. The opening film, developed in IDFA’s DocLab R&D Program, challenges Werner Herzog’s vision with an AI-generated script. The Envision Competition presents 12 stylish films, while the Luminous and Frontlight sections feature 23 and 13 premieres respectively that explore diverse artistic sensibilities. IDFA also announced competitions for Immersive Non-Fiction and Digital Storytelling, as well as a non-competitive DocLab Spotlight section.
