Brussels-Palestinian filmmaker Michel Khleifi, originally from Nazareth, is being honored with the Joseph Plateau Honorary Award for his groundbreaking work. After moving to Belgium in the 1970s and studying at INSAS, Khleifi made his feature debut with "Fertile Memory" (1981), the first feature film shot in the Palestinian West Bank. His international breakthrough came with "Noce en Galilée" (1987), the first Palestinian film screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the International Critics Prize. Khleifi's films, including "Forbidden Marriages in the Holy Land" (1999) and "Zindeeq" (2009), highlight political themes and injustice in the occupied region.
