The screenplay for the film Spoorloos, based on the novella Het Gouden Ei by Tim Krabbé, was inspired by an inspiring newspaper article about a missing Belgian tourist. Krabbé, who had previously worked with director George Sluizer on Red Desert Penitentiary, involved him in the project because of his knowledge of France. Their collaboration resulted in a successful film, although there were differences with the book, such as the handling of flashbacks and the expression of emotions. A disagreement about a scene led to a rift between Krabbé and Sluizer, but Krabbé ultimately acknowledged the film as a success. Spoorloos achieved international success and praise from Stanley Kubrick, among others.
