In "De jacht op Meral Ö", Stijn Bouma's feature film debut, the viewer is taken along in the experience of a single mother who is being pursued by the Dutch state, inspired by the Toeslagen scandal. Bouma and co-writer Roelof Jan Minneboo have sometimes adapted reality for the film, creating, among other things, a civil servant (Gijs Naber) who follows the main character Meral (Dilan Yurdakul). The film, which is part of a trilogy about the Toeslagen scandal, poses critical questions about the treatment of citizens by the government and society. Bouma emphasizes the absurdity and distrust in these situations, using a mix of styles to get the message across.
