In the series of interviews with recently graduated film talent, Filmkrant speaks with Joris Spaanderman (HKU) about his film "Hoe liefde en ik bevrienden" (How love and I became friends). The film, which is Spaanderman's most personal work to date, tells the story of 21-year-old Manu who temporarily returns to his father after anti-gay violence. Spaanderman emphasizes the complexity of themes such as father-son relationships, identity, and homosexuality, without them drowning each other out. He consciously chose to leave out the mother extra to focus on the father-son relationship and filmed in his birthplace Nijmegen to capture a nostalgic feeling. The film will be shown at the end of September at the Netherlands Film Festival.
