On 26/07/2024, the Federation of European Screen Directors (FERA) and the Federation of Screenwriters of Europe (FSE) published a joint call to strengthen European audiovisual diversity. In an eight-page booklet entitled “Culture is Democracy, Democracy is Culture,” they ask the EU to guarantee cultural diversity and freedom of expression, further regulate the use of AI and ensure fair pay and representation for writers and directors . They highlight the pressure on audiovisual creation in Europe due to the rise of global streamers and AI, and the need for transparency and compensation in the use of works by writers and directors. FERA and FSE together represent more than 30,000 European writers and directors.
