The Berlin Film Festival is introducing a new competition called Perspectives, focusing on feature film debuts, with a top prize of €50,000. This step creates direct competition with the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and its Tiger Competition, which focuses on a similar segment. Perspectives, building on the Best First Feature Award that has existed since 2006, will increase the visibility of debut filmmakers by selecting up to fourteen films. This could be disadvantageous for the IFFR, especially because the prize is higher than the €40,000 for the Tiger winner. The next editions of both festivals in 2025 partly overlap.
