The Lichting 2024 graduation films from the Dutch Film Academy highlight the power of language and communication. With 73 bachelor students presenting ten short films, including four documentaries and six fiction films, the works explore various themes such as climate change, family conflicts, love and integration processes. Films such as "The anatomy of a mermaid", "Doodzaam" by Ronald Zuidinga, "Kalf", "Goudvink" and the documentary "Draw me a homeland" by Nour Alkheder show how language can both connect and fail. Other works, such as “When We Were Boys,” “Fathers Are Sons Too,” and “January,” explore the limitations of communication. Suzanne Koopstra's "The Future is Bankrupt" reflects on change and nostalgia in Rotterdam, placing the power of image above language.
