The fire brigade has pumped water from a bunker at the Eye Film Museum in Castricum, where a valuable collection of nitrate films is stored. These films are particularly incendiary and are therefore stored outside Amsterdam. The flood, caused by a failing pump, now threatens the national film heritage. Although the film cans appear untouched, collection manager Frank Roumen warns that the actual damage has yet to be assessed. Climate change, with increased groundwater and higher temperatures, poses an increasing risk to the preservation of these films.
