Max van Praag, former director of the Dutch branch of the American film distributor UIP, has died at the age of eighty. Van Praag, born in Jamaica in 1943 to Jewish parents, was an influential extra in the Dutch film world. Under his leadership, UIP released major films such as James Bond, The Bourne Identity, Schindler's List and Mamma Mia!. Known for his amiable character and love of films, Van Praag was known as a passionate and diplomatic leader who did not shy away from expressing his opinion, even in confrontation with film critics. After his retirement in 2008, he remained active in the film world.
