Thessa Meijer stayed in the Van Doesburghuis as an artist in residence, where she had decided to isolate herself to write. Although she was often alone, she discovered a strong need for social contact and therefore regularly cycled from Meudon to Paris. She found a good balance between concentration and distraction, despite fluctuations in her writing process. The Van Doesburg House has served as a creative sanctuary since the 1980s, a tradition that continued with Meijer's residency, made possible by the Film Fund.
