After The Club of Ugly Children (2019) and Foodies (2022), on which he worked as a co-writer, screenwriter Jeroen Margry wrote Leeuwin (2023), his third cinema film. The film won the award for Best Film (category 10+) at the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy, one of the largest youth film festivals in the world, last month. Leeuwin, the story of a Surinamese girl who comes to the Netherlands and dreams of a career as a professional football player, at first glance shows little common ground with his own experiences, but Jeroen still draws most inspiration from everyday life: “As a writer you are a kind of sponge, everything you experience is stored somewhere”.
