Filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich passed away on Saturday, July 15, his sister, filmmaker HettyNaijkens-Retel Helmrich, has announced. Retel Helmrich was best known for his trilogy Eye of the Day, Shape of the Moon and Position among the Stars, for which he developed the Single Shot Cinema method. He received many awards and nominations at international film festivals. Retel Helmrich has also served on the Academy Awards jury and taught at prestigious universities such as Harvard and NYU. He turned 63 years old.
