The rules for the Oscar for Best Picture are being tightened. From 2025, films must be shown in 10 of the 50 major U.S. markets for a minimum of seven days, within 45 days of their original release. Non-US releases count for two of these ten markets, but must be released in one of the top fifteen international theatrical markets and the film's home country. The tightening stems from criticism from the film world that streaming services can qualify for the main prize too quickly.
