Secondary characters play a vital role in scenarios, from providing counterplay to providing comic relief. The Minions from the animated hit Despicable Me are a good example of this. Directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud turned the henchmen of supervillain Gru into childish, irresponsible characters, increasing Gru's appeal and making the Minions a popular phenomenon with its own film series.
