A painful miscommunication between Cannes and the Spanish filmmaker Victor Erice raises questions about the relationship between the main competition and other sections inside and outside the festival. Erice's melancholic work Close Your Eyes is back on the festival circuit for the first time in thirty years, but much to his surprise not in the main competition at Cannes. Erice was not present at the world premiere of his own film and shared a statement explaining that he was not happy with how the festival had handled his new film.
