The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicked off with the opening film Jeanne du Barry by director/actress Maïwenn, in which Johnny Depp plays a prominent role as the French King Louis XV. This historical drama about the scandalous relationship between the king and his mistress is Depp's first major film since his own scandalous affair with ex-partner Amber Heard. The festival offers a mix of committed world cinema and commercial films, including Steve McQueen's documentary about the occupation of Amsterdam and the fifth Indiana Jones film.
