The age rating of the 2002 film Pietje Bell remains '9 years and older', despite complaints from the makers. NICAM, the organization that monitors the Kijkwijzer, believes that violence can be seen that can be frightening for children under the age of 9. Producer Dave Schram filed a complaint because he wanted the film to be suitable for all ages again. Pietje Bell was a great success in the cinemas in 2002 and is traditionally broadcast on NPO Zapp during the Christmas holidays.
