The Belgian filmmaker and animator Raoul Servais has died at the age of 94 in his home in Leffinge. Servais is considered the pioneer of Belgian animation film and in October 2022 received the Joseph Plateau Honorary Award for his entire oeuvre. He devoted himself to his art in an uncompromising manner, constantly experimenting with new techniques and styles. In 1963 Servais founded the Animated Film department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he taught for many years.
