Martin Koolhoven attaches more value to the emotion he shows in his films than the message that is passed on. "Reality has no artistic value for me," he says in HP/De Tijd. "You can pass on a message and make it stick by linking an emotion to it. I don't think that message is that important, I think that emotion is important (...) ultimately I want to give a valuable emotion."
