The Flemish production houses warned on Friday in De Morgen about a crisis that threatens the entire sector. The causes are the faltering tax shelter, savings at the channels and heavy competition. Although programs such as "How shall I say it?", "Down the Road" and "Taboo" win prizes and other series are internationally acclaimed, an unprecedented crisis is taking place behind the scenes, according to the sector. According to VOFTP, the professional association of Flemish Independent Film and Television Makers, this crisis will create victims. The cause of this crisis is a combination of circumstances. For example, the tax shelter system is faltering, whereby those who invest in films or series can count on an advantageous tax rate. Last year, for the first time, too little money was raised to finance all current projects. The savings mode that the Flemish television channels are in is also making itself felt. And then there is the explosive growth in the number of production houses that is taking its toll.
