Film by the Sea is firmly anchored in the clay of Zeeland. For his first edition as the new festival director, Jan Doense looked for an image in which Zeeland, film and literature come together. He ended up with designer Paulina Matusiak, who in 2000 assisted (the recently deceased) Anthon Beeke in producing his artwork for Film by the Sea. Matusiak created an iconic Zeeland Girl, standing in front of a turbulent sea with a book in her hands and ribbons fluttering around her like film strips.
