Paul Haenen, who has been voicing Bert from the children's program Sesame Street for Dutch broadcasts since 1976, saw at the beginning of the series that there was "a relationship" between Bert and Ernie.
Writer Mark Saltzman, who has been associated with Sesame Street since 1984, previously announced that he was making the duo a couple.
