The European Commission is investing one million euros in a so-called preparatory action in which innovative solutions (such as crowdfunding) are investigated for subtitling European audiovisual works. This is with the aim of reducing the costs of subtitling and thus increasing the distribution (via on-demand services) of audiovisual works. The aim of this preparatory action is to develop and test cost-efficient subtitling methods and then apply them to catalogs of European works.
