Every time you loudly say “Happy Birthday” on a birthday, you are infringing copyright. At least, according to Warner Chappell Music, the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group. But a lawsuit could change that. The lawsuit was filed by documentary filmmaker Jennifer Nelson, who is working on a film about the song's complicated history. She decided to take up the business when she found out she had to pay $1,500 to have "Happy Birthday" featured in her documentary. According to Nelson and her company, the song belongs in the public domain.
