A Chinese singer who overwhelms the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam with her painted face, flowing gestures and screeching voice, is a diva from the Sichuan province. She is a sporan and is called Shen Tiemei. Filmmaker Frank Scheffer followed her in China together with Guo Wenjing, the most famous composer from China after Tan Dun. The filmmaker was there when the intended premiere conductor, Ed Spanjaard, was initiated into the secrets of Sichuan opera.
