Spanish director Vicente Aranda died on Tuesday at the age of 88. He died at his own home in Madrid, the Spanish Film Academy announced. Aranda was one of Spain's best-known and most influential filmmakers. From the 1960s he made more than thirty films. The director liked to make films about love and eroticism. The Spaniard also brought attention to less accessible topics such as transsexuality. Aranda's best-known film was Amantes from 1991. With the film noir he won two Goyas (Spanish film prize) for best director and best film. In Chicago, Aranda won the prize for best director with the film Amantes.
